THE TERRIBLE COST AND PAIN OF RITUAL. EARNEST MANN: BEING REAL PC.2
Rituals, Mental Health, and Mass Behavior: The Raw Truth with Earnest Mann
Hey, it's Earnest Mann here! Today, I’m tearing into mindless rituals, mental health signs, and the mass behavior that millions engage in without even realizing it. Still recovering from being sick, but rolling with it anyway because the truth doesn't wait!
Rituals vs. Habits: A Critical Distinction
I kick off by laying down why rituals irritate the hell out of me—especially when they cross from personal quirks into widespread dysfunction. I break down the difference between a habit (like grabbing a coffee at Starbucks) and a ritual (such as compulsively needing a certain number of steps to enter the building). Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and its visible signs are not just isolated mental health issues—they often manifest in our everyday actions unnoticed.
Religion, Ritual, and Rational Thought
I talk openly about being happily agnostic and appreciating Jesus' core philosophy without buying into the ritual-heavy practices of organized religion, particularly the Catholic Church. I share why I believe Jesus Christ wouldn't recognize himself in today's Catholic framework, highlighting how rituals have overtaken meaning in many religions.
The Death of Popes and the Mass Ritual Machine
Finally, I dig into the death of a pope, a ritual that millions blindly participate in. From ornate ceremonies to outdated traditions, I express my frustration at how ritualistic hypnosis sweeps up huge parts of the population, overriding intellect and reason.

00:00 some say I'm a vulgar man hell maybe I am but there's often a whole lot of truth buried in vulgarity look if fbombs and real talk crack your delicate little teacup go elsewhere there's a ton of corporatized and feminized non-offensive YouTube content out there that won't disturb your fragile sensibilities make you flinch or think but for those who can handle it I live by the words of the late great Jimmyi Hendris i'm the one that's got to die when it's time for me to die so let me live my life
00:36 and say things the way I want to there are quite a few things in life that even to this very day I don't understand hi my name is Ernest welcome before I get going I just wanted to apologize for not having an episode on Friday i was sick as a dog and as you can tell from my voice I'm still not 100% but I'll do my best one of the things that's always irritated the hell out of me are rituals i mean it makes sense if you're mentally ill and have some kind of obsessive compulsive disorder where one engages
01:20 ritualistically in an action which really has no connection with reality whatsoever such as someone washing their hands 20 30 or more times a day but when a very large percentage of humans are doing the same dysfunctional that's a different matter entirely this would also explain a very good reason that besides being very happily agnostic I could never be Catholic a religion known not only for its ungodly amount of overwhelming iconography hey how was that for an illustrative pun but it's tremendous
02:08 amount and focus on ritual i'm of the opinion that whenever strict observance to rituals becomes far more important than the message itself it's time to move on i'll see what St peter has to say to me at the pearly gates i'll take my chances i just want to reiterate that I am happily agnostic but I do very much appreciate much of the wisdom and philosophy of the Jesus i believe that Jesus or the original concept of Jesus is simply very cool now I know what I'm about to say is going to piss off a large percentage of a
02:54 particular group of people fortunately I've never lived my life attempting to win mass appeal or any popularity contest i'm just of the opinion just like in that fantastic much immortalized song from that fantastic band from the 70s the Doobie Brothers you younganss out there really need to check this out if you don't know the song Jesus is just All right with me as it totally kicks ass having said that I firmly believe that if Jesus Christ were here walking the earth today there are many things
03:38 that he would probably be but being Catholic would not be one of them because Jesus Christ despite their best efforts to mold and co-opt him would never be a Catholic but I just want to make clear this is not about ripping the ass of the Catholic faith specifically i'm talking about the dangers of engaging in mindless and purposeless rituals which is a very clear sign in symptomatology of mental illness if for example you're just having a short and superficial conversation with someone whether it be a friend or a co-orker and somehow the
04:25 conversation gets into coffee and they explain to you that they love their Starbucks coffee so much that they always start their day by going to Starbucks and getting their favorite Crappuccino or fuckino or whatever the hell they call those things and that's not a ritual that's a habit you could debate on whether or not it's a good or bad habit but it's not a ritual now on the other hand if someone you didn't know very well was with you in your car and one of you suggested stopping at Starbucks to get a coffee
05:07 and you get there and you get out of the car and both of you walk to the front door of the Starbucks then the other person says "Oh I forgot something this is something I actually experienced in my own life more than once." and they proceeded to head back to the car but a few moments later it dawns on you they wouldn't be able to get what they need because out of habit you locked the car and you have the keys but as you're standing in line to order you can clearly see outside the person returning to the door and you're
05:49 expecting them to come inside to request the keys so they could get whatever the hell it was they forgot but then you notice they stop immediately at the door and without hesitation turn around and start heading back to the car so by now you may have already gotten your coffee and you're sitting down with a clear view of what's taking place that person may not be able to see you but you can definitely see them and you're sitting there wondering what the as they do the same thing two more times when they finally do come into the
06:31 Starbucks and find you they may act as though nothing really weird happened at all or come up with some really superficial half-ass excuse and quickly change the subject as they get their coffee if you wisely choose not to ask them what this was all about what you just witnessed was a ritual a self-imposed set of actions that the person feels compelled to obey such as the total number of steps from the car to Starbucks must be exactly divisible by three just as a quick side note Nola Tesla had such rituals and that was only one of them
07:19 which was what was actually taking so long with the other person because they were adjusting their stride length to produce the necessary number of steps that could be divided by three before they could enter the Starbucks this would uh be a very clear indication of mental illness in this case obsessive compulsive disorder but the symptomatology in this case is being demonstrated through their ritual which is quite common what I'm trying to illustrate here is if you ask the person who is engaging in the ritual what the they're doing
08:09 it ends up being a pointless pursuit because unless you're a qualified mental health professional you simply don't understand the pathology and it would only actually make things worse you can't argue with someone who is engaging in their ritual and they don't have the objective functionality to even realize their own ritualistic pathology this in turn leads to my final message concerning this i've only been talking about one person here now imagine how I feel when I witness hundreds of millions
08:49 of people engaging in the same ritualized yet ultimately completely meaningless behavior i'm of course talking about the death of the latest ritual incarnation Pope Francis here's a news flash popes die there is a long drawn out and ornate ritual of the pope's passing which is followed by an equally meaningless long drawn out and ornate ritual of electing a new pope and this massive ritualistic hypnosis has been going on for quite a few centuries ever since the papacy was invented by the Holy Roman Catholic
09:37 Church with St peter and unfortunately based on the number of precipitators in this ritual I don't see that changing anytime soon good God anytime something like this happens when my intellect and reason is completely overwhelmed by completely irrational behavior by millions upon millions of people I simply don't know what to say hey Starbucks anyone so look I'm not going to ask you to click the subscribe or notification bell because I'm sure you guys already know how important that is for the channel to
10:26 grow so I'm not going to ask you nope ain't going to do it that's it not doing it so thank you very much for sticking around and until next Monday or Friday this is Earnest and I usually always am
